GOVERNMENT

Los Angeles City Council Monica Rodriguez became the first woman to represent the 7th district for the Los Angeles City Council when she was elected in July 2017. The district includes Pacoima, Sunland-Tujunga, Sylmar, Shadow Hills and Sun Valley. A lifelong resident of the district and daughter of working-class immigrants, Rodriguez had an extensive career in public, private and nonprofit sectors prior to serving on the council, including 10 years as an executive of the California Association of Realtors, where she developed the Mortgage Protection Program during the 2008 recession. Since then, she has overseen initiatives to combat illegal dumping, address the growing homelessness crisis in the Valley and help minority- and women-owned businesses compete for infrastructure and public works contracts.
