Los Angeles City Council Nithya Raman is new to the Los Angeles City Council, winning the District 4 seat from incumbent David Ryu in November. Raman, who has never held public office, is an urban planner, community advocate and mother of twins. Prior to her seat on the council, Raman served as executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment, an organization advocating for women’s equity and safety in the entertainment industry. She worked for the City Administrative Officer of Los Angeles in 2014. While in the role, Raman was tasked with writing a report detailing the city’s $100 million spending for homelessness funds. Her findings said the city was using the money to incarcerate homeless people rather than provide services. In India, Raman founded Transparent Chinnai, an organization that works to advocate for basic resources in residential slums. ALMA MATER: Harvard University, MIT
