California Lutheran University Lori Varlotta, Ph.D., became the first female president at California Lutheran University on Sept. 1, succeeding longtime fixture Chris Kimball in the role. Varlotta put her 35 years of college administration experience to work when she took over amid a pandemic and national reckoning with racial and social injustice. Prior to CLU, Varlotta served as president at Hiram College in Ohio for six years and various administrative roles at California State University - Sacramento, the University of San Francisco and the University of Wisconsin. Her learning initiatives at Hiram sparked a national movement in the higher education world called the “New Liberal Arts,” brought to fruition by “record-breaking fundraising campaigns,” CLU said.
