California Lutheran University Austrian native Gerhard Apfelthaler, Ph.D., is the dean of the School of Management at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. His notable career includes serving as Deputy Austrian Trade Commissioner to the United States, founding a university in Austria as well as a boutique consulting firm specializing in global business development and co-founding two pharmaceutical startups, a nonprofit and the European Journal of International Management. He joined California Lutheran in 2009 as professor of international business and became dean in 2013. ALMA MATER: Vienna (Austria) University of Economics and Business Administration. BEST ADVICE: The best time to plant a tree would have been 30 years ago; the second-best time is now! FAVORITE BOOK: J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings,” but I also keep a copy of the Chinese classic “The 300 Tang Poems” on my desk, which I read whenever I’m stressed. BUCKET LIST: About a hundred travel destinations.
