BUSINESS

The Acorn Newspaper Group Lisa Rule, with husband Jim, purchased the Agoura Hills-based newspaper The Acorn when it went on the auction block in April 1996. With the help of family, they scraped together enough money to bid on the weekly serving the Agoura Hills, Oak Park and Calabasas communities. From there, they expanded. Today, the Rules run five weeklies and a lifestyle quarterly named Beyond the Acorn. She was named the Community Advocate of the Year in 2016 by the Ventura County chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners. And in 2017, she and Jim were given the California Press Foundation’s Justus F. Craemer Newspaper Executive of the Year award. ALMA MATER: UCSB BEST ADVICE: It is better to wear fuzzy slippers than try to carpet the world. FAVORITE BOOK: “The Quiet American” by Graham Greene. BUCKET LIST: Visit Ireland (where I have never been) and Thailand (where I have been).
